A piece of history
Penicuik Estate has been owned and managed by the Clerk family since 1654, successive generations have taken turns to manage this unique place creating a remarkable legacy of landscape, architecture and pioneering rural enterprise.
Designed and built in the 1770s by Sir James Clerk (3rd Baronet) as a Stable Block for Old Penicuik House with a clocktower and a replica of a Roman temple which once stood on the Antonine Wall serving also as a dovecote. It is regarded as one of the most important Palladian buildings of its kind.
The property was converted by the Clerk family after the great fire of Old Penicuik House in 1899. It is characterised by the reuse of salvaged architecture from Old Penicuik House, creating a striking original design.
