Activities

Golf
East Lothian is renowned for its stunning links courses with Muirfield, Luffness, Gullane, North Berwick and Dunbar all within easy reach, offering the keen golfer a huge choice.

Beaches
Wonderful sandy beaches along the spectacular East Lothian coastline, including Gullane beach, the dunes at Belhaven, as well as Yellowcraig and Seacliff beaches.  Seacliff has a tiny harbour with wonderful views north towards the Bass Rock and Tantallon Castle.  The Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick is also worth a visit.

Edinburgh
The city of Edinburgh is approx. 25 miles where you can explore the fascinating architecture of the old town and soak up the culture and heritage of this beautiful, vibrant city. Wander the cobbled closes and narrow stairwells of the Royal Mile and Grassmarket; take a candle-lit tour of the underground vaults of the old city for some fascinating tales of Edinburgh’s darker past; or perhaps partake in a wee dram or a tasting session at the Scotch Whisky Centre where you can learn to nose, swirl and taste like an expert.

Finally, take a visit to the iconic Edinburgh Castle, which sits majestically over the city and houses the Crown Jewels of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, 15th Century gun Mons Meg, and the National War Museum of Scotland. And if you’re lucky enough to be in the city in August, don’t miss the vibrant Fringe Festival, exceptional Jazz and Blues Festival or the Edinburgh Military Tattoo ending with a poignant lone piper lament high on the castle ramparts.

Discover East Lothian and the Lammermuir Hills

The John Muir Way is renowned for miles of scenic paths, ideal for walking and cycling. Canoeing, kayaking and wakeboarding can be enjoyed close by, and golf is available on some of our most revered courses, a short distance away. The Lammermuir Hills offer a great escape into nature.

Activities for everyone
There’s a myriad of fun activities at Papple, try rounders or croquet, explore the woods and wild meadows. There’s so much to discover locally – surf school, wild swimming, hiking in the Lammermuirs, mountain biking, fishing, wildlife cruises, cookery classes and a visit to see Concorde at the Museum of Flight..

Activity Retreats
Draw inspiration from our rich heritage everywhere we look, from the smallest of features to our expansive green spaces.  Activity retreats like outdoor cooking, scything, foraging, painting, yoga, geological tours, cycling tours and wall building are a great success at Papple.
