Murthly & Strathbraan Estates

The Estate’s natural setting and designed landscapes are irresistible to many: partridge shooting over heather, birch woods and upland; pheasant shooting in the designed landscape around Murthly Castle; and fishing on a part of the Tay that has attracted well-known artists such as Sir John Millais.

The River Tay at Murthly is where the British record salmon of 64 lbs was landed in 1922. The extensive river beats feature some of the most picturesque and peaceful salmon fishing to be had, with catch numbers (522 salmon in 2011) equalling many beats on the lower river, thanks to a combination of deep pools, shaded banks and the expert guidance of our ghillies.

A day’s shooting at Murthly begins with a warm welcome at a recently converted stone farm court, complete with lunch room and wood-burning stove. The wide variety of terrain here makes for a most exciting day, with shooting parties returning year after year to sample new challenges. Lunch is available either at the farm court or, if you want to make it a really special day, at Murthly Castle.
