Castles
There are many wonderful historic sites not far from Logiealmond including Scone Palace, the crowning place of Scottish Kings, and Glamis Castle, childhood home to the beloved Queen Mother.
Stirling Castle is one of Scotland’s grandest castles with an imposing position and impressive architecture. Visitors can enjoy costumed characters, interactive displays, and revel in Renaissance splendour. With excellent facilities and a focus on accessibility for all, the castle makes for a great daytrip.
Once host to Mary, Queen of Scots, Glamis Castle also has a deep connection to today’s Royal Family. With its fairy-tale turrets, sweeping driveway, and reputation as ‘Scotland’s most haunted’ castle, visitors enjoy touring its 100 rooms and glorious gardens from Mid-March to October.
Fifteen hundred years ago the site on which Scone Palace sits was the capital of the Pictish kingdom, and 42 kings of Scotland have been crowned here, including Robert the Bruce in 1306. These days the majestic stately home is well worth a visit between April to October to see the wonderful collection of artworks and treasures. Take your walking shoes too as there are 100 acres of gardens to explore including the Murray Star Maze.
Whisky
Perthshire lays claim to the oldest working distillery in the country at Glenturret as well other wonderful examples of Highland whisky such as Tullibardine, and Dewars.
Glenturret
Two miles northwest of nearby Crieff, on the banks of the Turrett River, you can find Scotland’s oldest working distillery. Official records date back to 1763, but legends suggest that whisky was illicitly distilled at Glenturret from 1717! Today Glenturret Distillery is a five-star visitor attraction, and a tour brings both the history and the traditional whisky-making craft alive. A visit to the fabulous ‘The Glenturret’ Lalique Michelin starred restaurant and bar is also recommended!
Tullibardine
Originally the site of a brewery with the Royal Charter back in the 15th century, this distillery enjoys the same clear, spring water as its neighbour Highland Spring. With the choice of a classic 45-minute tour or longer 90-minute bonded tour, this is an interesting opportunity to visit an independent, family-owned distillery.
Dewars
With its signature pagoda roof still dominating the distillery’s skyline, you’ll enjoy a visit to this 125-year-old distillery in Aberfeldy. Its interactive heritage exhibition explains the Dewar family’s pursuit of whisky-making perfection and there are different tours and tastings available.
