Your own private island! Kilmory Lodge on the Island of Scarba in Argyll is a truly special place. Located just north of the Island of Jura, Scarba is uninhabited, privately owned and offers a unique and exclusive west coast holiday experience. Sea eagles and golden eagles soar on the thermals around the lodge most days, whilst sea otters and seals will be seen on the shores of the bay. This is Scotland at its very best. Wildlife in abundance, spectacular views of the Hebrides and complete privacy. We are privileged to be involved with this unique island.
The peak of Cruach Scarba rises to 1500ft and with uninterrupted views of the Hebrides is truly breathtaking. Scarba is surrounded by islands and skerries, large and small with beaches and wildlife in abundance.
Kilmory Lodge & the hospitality
The 19th century Kilmory Lodge is accessed only via private charter boat, seaplane, or helicopter. Best described as ruggedly luxurious, with 5 double bedrooms and a 6th bedroom comprising of 6 bunk beds, which is ideal for children. The top floor bedrooms have been recently refurbished with modern light décor and the first and second floor bedrooms with original panelling and log burning stoves, create a cosy traditional lodge. If peat in the bathwater is not to your liking this holiday experience is probably not for you, but if delicious, locally sourced langoustine, lobster, beaches and boat trips and the best sunsets in the world, then this is a place to book.
The lodge is let on a fully catered basis for parties of up to 8/10 guests. The chef will prepare a cooked breakfast each morning before the day’s activities, including packed lunches or you might have a barbecue on the beach instead, and back to the lodge for a three-course dinner. The Kilmory chef works with only the freshest, local ingredients, including langoustine which is dropped off on the pier and is all are part of the Scarba experience.
Summer weeks are geared around beach, boats, water sports, barbecues, whisky safaris, brown trout fishing on the two estate hill lochans, mackerel fishing, lobster potting and crabbing and at the end of the day, sundowner drinks overlooking the sea that will leave you in awe. This is all part of the Scarba experience.
How to get there
Oban Airport located at North Connel is the closest airport for private aircraft. Both Edinburgh and Glasgow airports are approximately 3 hours drive and both have excellent car hire and transfers can be easily arranged.
From Oban it is a short 25 minute drive via the ‘Bridge over the Atlantic’ to the Isle of Seil to the North Cuan ferry terminal.
You then take the short 5 min ferry crossing, across the Cuan Sound, to the Isle of Luing. On reaching Luing, you will then drive south on the single track road to the village of Toberonochy, (PA34 4UE), where you will be met on the pier by the awaiting Kilmory rib. You will then enjoy a 20 minute cruise past the beautiful Isle of Luing and on to the Island of Scarba. On reaching the Scarba pier, you will be collected by two 4×4’s which will take you up to the lodge for a well-earned refreshment.
There is a strong 4G signal on the island for mobile reception and internet. This is an ‘off grid’ experience. Hot water is heated by a wood burning stove. Power is generated by solar panels for charging iPhones etc, and a generator as a back up for additional power supply/13 amp plug sockets. Gas fridge and ovens. This is all taken care of by your two hosts and your chef/cook.
The Rental
The rental for Kilmory Lodge is for up to 10 guests on a fully catered basis to include all meals and drinks, for up to seven nights. The rental includes all activities, trout fishing on the island lochans, local lobster potting and mackerel fishing and sundowners on the boat.
*Please note that the fast Rib is used most days for getting to and from some beautiful remote beaches and locations. Given the recent increase in fuel charges there will be a fuel charge at the end of the week. This is now based on a rate of £70.00 per hour. The longer boat journeys to Mull (Loch Spelve), Jura whisky distillery and the beautiful Island of Colonsay with its white sandy beaches are all worthwhile visiting and take approx. 45 mins/one hour in the Rib. The beaches are worth it!
Dogs: There is a lot of boating involved during your Kilmory Lodge experience (on the Rib and on the fishing boat) therefore it is recommended that guests do not bring their dogs.
