Your own private island! Kilmory Lodge on the Island of Scarba in Argyll is a truly special place. Located just north of the Island of Jura, Scarba is uninhabited, privately owned and offers a unique and exclusive west coast holiday experience. Sea eagles and golden eagles soar on the thermals around the lodge most days, whilst sea otters and seals will be seen on the shores of the bay. This is Scotland at its very best. Wildlife in abundance, spectacular views of the Hebrides and complete privacy. We are privileged to be involved with this unique island.
The peak of Cruach Scarba rises to 1500ft and with uninterrupted views of the Hebrides is truly breathtaking. Scarba is surrounded by islands and skerries, large and small with beaches and wildlife in abundance.
Kilmory Lodge & the hospitality
The 19th century Kilmory Lodge is accessed only via private charter boat, seaplane, or helicopter. Best described as ruggedly luxurious, with 5 double bedrooms and a 6th bedroom comprising of 6 bunk beds, which is ideal for children. The top floor bedrooms have been recently refurbished with modern light décor and the first and second floor bedrooms with original panelling and log burning stoves, create a cosy traditional lodge. If peat in the bathwater is not to your liking this holiday experience is probably not for you, but if delicious, locally sourced langoustine, lobster, beaches and boat trips and the best sunsets in the world, then this is a place to book.
The lodge is let on a fully catered basis for parties of up to 8/10 guests. The chef will prepare a cooked breakfast each morning before the day’s activities, including packed lunches or you might have a barbecue on the beach instead, and back to the lodge for a three-course dinner. The Kilmory chef works with only the freshest, local ingredients, including langoustine which is dropped off on the pier and is all are part of the Scarba experience.
Summer weeks are geared around beach, boats, water sports, barbecues, whisky safaris, brown trout fishing on the two estate hill lochans, mackerel fishing, lobster potting and crabbing and at the end of the day, sundowner drinks overlooking the sea that will leave you in awe. This is all part of the Scarba experience.
How to get there
Oban Airport located at North Connel is the closest airport for private aircraft. Both Edinburgh and Glasgow airports are approximately 3 hours drive and both have excellent car hire and transfers can be easily arranged.
From Oban it is a short 25 minute drive via the ‘Bridge over the Atlantic’ to the Isle of Seil to the North Cuan ferry terminal.
You then take the short 5 min ferry crossing, across the Cuan Sound, to the Isle of Luing. On reaching Luing, you will then drive south on the single track road to the village of Toberonochy, (PA34 4UE), where you will be met on the pier by the awaiting Kilmory rib. You will then enjoy a 20 minute cruise past the beautiful Isle of Luing and on to the Island of Scarba. On reaching the Scarba pier, you will be collected by two 4×4’s which will take you up to the lodge for a well-earned refreshment.
There is a strong 4G signal on the island for mobile reception and internet. This is an ‘off grid’ experience. Hot water is heated by a wood burning stove. Power is generated by solar panels for charging iPhones etc, and a generator as a back up for additional power supply/13 amp plug sockets. Gas fridge and ovens. This is all taken care of by your two hosts and your chef/cook.
The Rental
The rental for Kilmory Lodge is for up to 10 guests on a fully catered basis to include all meals and drinks, for up to seven nights. The rental includes all activities, trout fishing on the island lochans, local lobster potting and mackerel fishing and sundowners on the boat.
Accommodation
Kilmory Lodge provides fully catered accommodation for parties of up to 10 guests. The lodge is accessed only by private charter boat, seaplane or helicopter. Best described as ruggedly luxurious, the accommodation is arranged over three floors and briefly comprises:
Sitting room, with original panelling and wood burning stove (‘L’ shaped sofa and two armchairs)
Kitchen/dining room with comfortable seating for 10 guests. There is a sofa at one end of the dining area.
Across the courtyard there is a Games Room/Playroom with table tennis table, sofa and wood burning stove
Utility room/gunroom/pantry
Six bedrooms in total:
Three x double bedrooms
One x double/twin bedroom on the ground floor (zip and link)
One x twin bedroom
One x bunk room with six bunks (situated on the ground floor used for staff)
Two bathrooms all with a bath, WC, basin. (one with overhead shower).
WC and basin on the recently refurbished second floor.
Further separate WC and basin. Four WC’s in total.
The first and second floor bedrooms have original panelling and log burning stoves. The two top floor bedrooms (one double and one twin) which has been recently refurbished offers modern and light décor.
As we have mentioned, if peat in the bathwater is not to your liking this island experience is probably not for you, but everything else outweighs this truly special and unique holiday experience and is one not to be missed.
The lodge chef will prepare a cooked breakfast each morning before the day’s activities, packed lunches can be arranged accordingly or barbecues on the beach can also be arranged and all part of the Scarba experience. Three course dinners will be prepared and served each evening. Menus and dietary requirements can be discussed with the chef. A selection of house wines, spirits and beer are included.
Dogs: There is a lot of boating involved during your Kilmory Lodge experience (on the Rib and on the fishing boat) therefore it is recommended that guests do not bring their dogs.

Sporting
The island comprises of around 5000 acres and holds some impressive Hebridean Red stags. A rich natural diet throughout the summer months complimented with nutritious seaweed during the mild, gulf stream aided winter months, helps the stags maintain fabulous quality. Trophy stags are seen frequently, fed off a purely natural and unaided diet, just the way it should be.
During the summer months, wild brown trout fishing can be enjoyed on the two estate lochans, as well as mackerel fishing and lobster potting from the estate boat, a 21ft Dory with twin x 90HP outboards. The estate also has the faster 8.5 metre Rib with twin x 200HP outboard engines for easy access to nearby islands, beaches and the many wonderful places to visit.
During the autumn we will be able to let one two stalking weeks for up to 10 stags with up to two parties going out each day with a stalker. Estate rifles can be available if required. Stags are extracted by either ATV or by boat.
Stalking can be arranged from late August for one or two stags if required. Stags to be charged at the rate of £600.00 plus VAT.
