On the western edge of Europe, in the wild waters of the Atlantic Ocean, lie the dramatic, beautiful and unspoilt Western Isles. Sometimes better known as the Outer Hebrides, these bastions of Gaelic language and culture are a world away from the mainland of Britain.

Grogarry Lodge nestles between the majestic Ben Mòr and twenty miles of blinding white sand beaches. Eagles swoop and soar from the towering 2,200 ft peak over hills and lochs where a wild herd of pure Red Deer graze on the heather.

A paradise of wildlife and stunning scenery, where the great outdoors is so close it almost comes in the door, the Isle of South Uist and Grogarry Lodge offer the perfect opportunity for a get-away-from-it-all holiday like no other.

A fully catered week, based on a minimum 8 guests, is from £8,065.00.  Sport in addition.
Grogarry Lodge can accommodate up to 19 guests, please contact us for more information.

Accommodation

There are eight bedrooms which are served by five bathrooms, shower rooms and WCs.

There are six twin and two double rooms, all named after lochs on the Estate.  Many of the bedrooms offer grand vistas across Grogarry Loch to the Atlantic Ocean and over the croft land that forms the bedrock of the local community.

Activities

With dramatic hill-ranges and miles of white sandy beach, wildflower meadows of the machair, and calm lochs the South Uist Estate is home to one of the most untouched landscapes in Europe.

Grogarry Lodge overlooks a National Nature Reserve and many areas of the islands have been designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest, Environmentally Sensitive Areas or other designations denoting the presence of a rare bird, insect or plant.

Whilst staying at Grogarry guests have the opportunity to enjoy walks in the hills, along the coastline and to the many points of interest and historical sites found nearby. Tours, with knowledgeable guides, are available to suit your requirements depending on whether you want a gentle stroll along the machair and beach, or the chance to play the exemplary ‘Old Tom Morris’ Golf course, or a strenuous climb in the hills.

Uist is home to the purebred Eriskay Pony, which is Europe’s most endangered native pony breed. The infamous Shetland Pony can also be found in Uist. The Short-eared Owls are commonly seen hunting during the day and otters are often spotted playing on the rocky coastline.

The estate offers visitors an unrivaled opportunity to spot rare & protected wildlife on the island.

Sporting

Grogarry Lodge, on the South Uist Estate is renowned for having some of the best wild fishing, shooting, and stalking in the UK and Europe.

Fishing
Some of the finest wild brown trout, sea trout and salmon fishing is on the doorstep. The burns and lochs are not stocked and the lack of fish farms in the western watershed of the islands has kept the gene pool pure.

With 15% of the UK freshwater surface area on the islands, there is plenty of choice for the keen fly fisherman, from sandy machair lochs to peaty hill lochs an hour’s walk into the hills. With over 800 lochs and lochans available to fish, there is endless opportunity to get away from it all and enjoy an undisturbed day’s fishing among the abundant wildlife of deer, eagles, harriers and corncrakes to name a few.

Our hill lochs tend to have large populations of fish, albeit ‘monster’ fish are caught there from time to time, the best baskets of Brown Trout are caught in the machair lochs where the size of fish range from 1lb up to 5lbs.

Salmon and Sea Trout of up to 6lbs are caught regularly and hard-fighting Brown Trout are a particular attraction in the hill lochs. Five year averages are as follows: Salmon/grilse 96.6; Sea-trout 569.6; Brown trout 2238.2.

The conditions can be challenging and you will have to work for your fish on the machair lochs. We encourage the use of a Ghillie as they can be an invaluable asset to you through sharing advice and experience of fishing South Uist lochs. Ghillies are available by arrangement upon booking.

The Brown Trout season runs from March to September, whilst the Sea-Trout and Salmon runs late-June through until October.

Shooting & stalking
Grogarry Lodge offers an exceptional sporting experience in a near-unrivalled setting. The South Uist Estate is an exceptional environment where sporting options include Snipe (October), Woodcock (November, December, January), Duck & Goose (September onwards) and Red Deer stalking (July – Oct).

All sporting activities are organised and operated by the Estate’s Gamekeepers who actively manage the health and size of the wild deer herd and bird population to ensure they are healthy, sustainable and impact as little as possible on the crofting activities of the island community
