Fishing
The annual average catch on Gallery has now risen to 180 salmon/grilse and 20 sea trout, an excellent result considering the largely fly-only restrictions. There is fishing on 11 pools (as listed below) spread over just under 1.5 miles. The beat is situated just upstream from Marykirk. The two downsteam beats being Canterland and Morphie Dyke respectively.
Fishing is currently available to let during the period mid-February to end August. The beat has traditionally been fished quite lightly during the earlier part of the year but fish begin running very early and Trout and Salmon magazine highlighted the North Esk as one of the UK’s better spring salmon rivers. Just remember to wrap up well in February, although there is a wood burning stove in the fishing hut.
June by contrast offers long, warm (and midge-free!) evenings when there is a good chance of sea trout, perhaps following a barbecue on the farmhouse terrace (Weber barbecue available) There is an extraordinary profusion of flowers on the river bank in mid-summer, especially sweet rocket followed by campanulas.
The Gallery beat is 5 minutes drive or 20 minutes walk from the farmhouse which is located only 50 yards from the river. There is a ghillie available to give advice and assistance when required.
Rental rates for the 3 to 4 rod beat are:
February – June inclusive £75/rod/day (min. 3 rods)
July/ £100/rod/day (min. 4 rods)
August / £115 / rod / day (min. 4 rods)
September/October £130/rod/day (min. 4 rods)
