Partridge shooting in Spain – Fit for a King!
If you are planning a special shooting trip this coming season and would like to experience some fantastic driven partridge shooting in Spain, then I think I have the answer!

Fuentelfresno – Nr Madrid
Fuentelfresno is a mere 45 minutes from Madrid Airport. This is a family shoot, which takes in several hamlets. Carlos de Llanza Mata owns an estate of around 4000 acres and leases a further 31,000 acres, over which he shoots partridges. The scenery and landscape is wonderful and the topography is perfect for partridge shooting.

Madrid Airport
You arrive at the airport and will be welcomed by Patricio Herguido De Juan, Carlos’ son-in- law, who speaks perfect English. If you are travelling with your shotguns these will be looked after by Patricio or one of his team and will be cleared through customs. You will then be driven to their lovely home, a very comfortable lodge, which offers a real charm and atmosphere. Ideally you would stay for three nights and have two days shooting.

The shooting
The shooting is sensational! The minimum is a 500 bird day. The first day we shot 735 birds and the next day we shot 640. Consistent, quality birds were produced in every drive. This is a military operation with a team of around 70 beaters, including your loader and secretario.

A culinary experience between drives!
After each drive a table is put up and you are served the most wonderful tapas and drinks. Lunch is generally after the 3rd drive and is a great event. We enjoyed delicious authentic paella in the middle of the finca/estate with magnificent far reaching views in every direction.

The family – The King and the Princess!
This family shoot is favoured by many of the royal houses of Europe and King Juan Carlos, although no longer young, still takes 6 days during the year when he comes, either with friends and family, or as a guest of friends. The photos displayed in the lodge go from Caroline of Monaco (who on a yearly basis takes a team of ladies to shoot with her), to Dutch Crown Prince William Alexander van Oranje, and the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. Despite a wonderful array of guests, Fuentelfresno is remarkably relaxed and informal and your hosts Carlos and Patricio are charming and will make you feel at home as soon as you walk through the front door. Patricio and his lovely wife Lucia speak very good English.

The cost
This is an all-inclusive. Everything is included!
The travel to and from Madrid Airport, the gun licenses, the paperwork, the cartridges, all meals and drinks are all included in the price. The only additional cost is a tip to the loader and secretario and a tip to the house staff, which equates to no more than €200.

The estate extends to just over 35,000 acres, taking in the villages of Fuentelahiguera, Viñuelas and Valdenuño. The terrain is varied and made up of olive groves, vineyards, arable ground and undulating ground and valleys, which provide an ideal habitat for red legged partridge. There are usually four or five drives in one day. Aperitifs (tapas) and drinks are available between each drive.

The season
The red-legged partridge season runs from 8th October – 8th February.

Shopping and Flamenco dancers!
The estate will arrange for non-shooting guests to visit Madrid, Sigüenza, Toledo for sightseeing and shopping. Spanish Flamenco dancing can be arranged at Fuentelfresno.

Larger groups/special celebration
If you require a larger group gathering there is an additional fully staffed lodge 3 km from Fuentelfresno, which offers 10 bedrooms all with ensuite bathrooms.

If you are keen to arrange a shooting trip in Spain this season and are looking for a great venue, then please let me know. I would be delighted to chat this through with you in more detail.

Fuentelfresno is located 59 kilometres to the northwest of Madrid in the Campiña de Guadalajara (the countryside of the province of Guadalajara).

Accommodation

Fuentelfresno
Fuentelfresno is located in Guadalajara, 59 km from Madrid (North-East) and 50 km from Madrid Barajas Airport. The hunting lodge is situated in the middle of Fuentelfresno in the countryside just 20 minutes from the furthest drive. The lodge consists of two sitting rooms both with wonderful open fireplaces, a large dining room and 9 comfortable bedrooms all with ensuite bathrooms. It has a great feel and atmosphere. There are 8 double bedrooms and 1 single bedroom. There is a further twin bedroom with ensuite bathroom 100 metres from the main house, which benefits from a sauna. There are lovely far reaching views from the lodge over the countryside to the hills beyond.

Activities

Sporting

The shooting ground occupies a total of 15,000 hectares where fields of grain mix with vineyards, olive groves and hills spotted with ilex, rockrose, retama brush and rosemary, all of which make up the perfect habitat for the Spanish red-legged partridge. The estate offers a variety superb drives, from gentle undulations, still producing fast flying birds to deep ravines producing high quality high birds.

A typical day of shooting at Fuentelfresno starts with a hearty breakfast at the house, followed by three drives with a delicious ‘tapas’ or snack, between each drive. I’ve had them and they’re great! After the third drive lunch is served in one of the various beautifully positioned shooting huts. After lunch there are two more drives. The party will then return to the house for afternoon tea or something stronger. Relax and then there is a 3 course dinner.
