Dalnaglar Castle is set upon a naturally elevated site in the heart of Glenshee, which translates as ‘The Valley of Peace’ and is known locally as ‘the fairy glen’. Originally an 18th century hunting lodge, Dalnaglar Castle was commissioned by Lord Clyde, Queen Victoria’s banker, and designed by Her Majesty’s architect from Balmoral.

The Castle is a wonderful location for large groups, as well as a superb venue for short breaks, anniversaries, family birthdays and reunions. Situated in a tranquil and peaceful glen, it is also a great location for business meetings and retreats.

Public rooms include a comfortable sitting room, well stocked library, elegant dining room over-looking the garden and a reception room, all with their own fireplaces. Dalnaglar can sleep up to 18 guests. Each bedroom is individually designed and has a character all its own. Guests have exclusive use of the castle and grounds.

The estate is situated on the banks of the River Shee and has a beat just under a mile offering excellent salmon and trout fishing. There is also trout fishing on our private Loch. A ghillie is available upon request.

For the outdoor enthusiast there is clay pigeon shooting on the estate, hill walking to experience the breathtaking scenery. Quad and mountain biking, falconry and pony trekking can be arranged locally.  There are also a couple of paddle boards for guest’s use on the loch. The local distillery, Persie, can also offer tutored gin tastings!

For the golfer there are over 100 golf courses in the surrounding area, including Gleneagles, Carnoustie, St Andrews and Rosemount.

Driven or walked up days, and duck flighting can be arranged. Red deer and roe deer stalking can be arranged on nearby estates.

Set amidst the atmospheric Scottish Highlands, Dalnaglar Castle provides the perfect escape from the strains of everyday life.

Sporting

Fishing
There is salmon fishing of just under a mile on the Dalnaglar beat of the River Shee, which is a tributary of the Tay, and borders part of the Estate. There are several good holding pools and in the right water conditions this short beat can perform well. Salmon fishing rods are available to hire for use on and off the Estate.

Brown trout are plentiful in the scenic estate loch which is surrounded by enormous Douglas Spruce. Some very big fish have been caught and the loch has not been fished heavily for a number of years. You are welcome to fish with or without the boat. Ghillie is available to assist. Rods and flies can be hired from the Estate.

Stalking
Red Stags are available in September. Roe buck stalking is available from April until October.

Driven and Walked-up Shooting
There are several extremely high quality and welcoming shoots offering all types of driven and walked up game surrounding the Estate, including Grouse, partridge, pheasant and duck. As always, we are happy to arrange this for you, or alternatively can help suggest and put you in contact with the relevant people.

Hawks
We are able to offer Harris Hawks and Red Tailed Hawks which clients can fly to rabbits in Dalnaglar Castle parkland. In addition, we can offer the opportunity to see and handle Owls, Kestrels etc. An amazing opportunity to try something new or improve on skills you may already have.

Activities

The experienced staff at Dalnaglar are happy to organise any addition you may need, such as transport for tours of local places of interest or live local entertainment, including a piper, whisky tasting, guided walks or a story teller, etc. at cost price. Please contact us for an exact price for your requirements.

Situated in one of Scotland’s most rugged and spectacularly beautiful glens, Dalnaglar Castle lies above the flat water meadows of Shee Water, which meanders down the wooded vale. No matter which direction you choose to travel in to Dalnaglar, you will find some of the most breathtaking mountain scenery.

The Glen provides one of the main routes through the lower Grampians. To the south, just 30 miles away, is the beautiful and historic city of Perth. Also within easy reach, Edinburgh is a mere two hours. To the west are Pitlochry and The House of Bruar – known as ‘the Harrods of Scotland’ – and Balmoral lies to the north. Indeed, Dalnaglar is ideally situated for visits to many other famous Castles and historic sites.

The Estate is 8 miles from the Spittal of Glenshee ski resort, and within easy reach of fabulous sightseeing and a multitude of other activities.

Golf
Local courses are: Braemar (the highest course in Scotland, and possibly one of the most breathtaking, with the Cairngorm Mountains rising up each side of the course), also the Championship course at Rosemount and Blairgowrie, or the smart professional course at Glenisla. In total there are over 100 golf courses in the surrounding area including Gleneagles (90 minutes) and St. Andrews. We are happy to make any arrangements you may need for your golfing needs.

Don’t forget, Dalnaglar isn’t just for those in pursuit of sport, but also for anyone who wishes to explore the wonders of rural Scotland and relax in exquisite surroundings, away from the strains of every day life.
