Battle of Littleferry
A self-guided walk that sets the scene for the Battle of Culloden which happened the following day. The walk begins outside Dunrobin Castle.
Cawdor Castle
The village and Castle of Cawdor are just off the A96 between Inverness and Nairn. The castle dates from the late 14th century and was built as a private fortress by the Thanes of Cawdor, immortalised in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. As well as the castle there are three gardens, the Cawdor Big Wood and a nine-hole golf course.
Culloden Battlefield
The site of a great battle in 1746 between Jacobite clans and government soldiers in which Bonnie Prince Charlie was defeated.
The battlefield is open daily. The visitor centre is closed at Christmas and in January.
Moray Firth
Best known for its resident population of dolphins, the Moray Firth is one of the best places in Europe to see these mammals in the wild. Experts estimate that around 130 bottlenose dolphins live in the Moray Firth. The dolphins often leap clear of the water close to the shore. Harbour seals are also a common sight, hauled out on mudbanks and sandy shores. Further out, harbour porpoises, white-beaked dolphins, minke whales, pilot whales and killer whales can sometimes be seen.
