Bighouse Lodge is let on a fully catered basis for up to 20 guests and offers salmon fishing on the famous River Halladale. Walked-up grouse and stalking, along with sea fishing and trout fishing on the estate lochs. Bighouse Lodge is located on the very north coast of Scotland in a wonderful position by Melvich Bay.
Bighouse Lodge lies on the north coast of Sutherland in a stunning location at the mouth of the River Halladale, adjacent to the sea and the amazing Melvich beach! The very comfortable Georgian lodge has 12 double/twin en-suite bedrooms sleeping a total of 24 guests.
Stalking is available over 60,000 acres, together with salmon fishing on the River Halladale (5 year average is 730). Loch fishing, red and hind stalking, walked-up grouse, rough shooting, driven partridge, wild fowling and sea fishing can all be arranged. Sea fishing can be arranged from Scrabster. The proximity to the sea and beach (5 minute walk) make it very special. Bighouse Estate provides a first class sporting and family destination.
Fishing
The lodge sits at the mouth of the River Halladale, a well known spate salmon river. Along its 15 mile length there are some 50 named pools. The river has 6 beats (2 upper and 4 lower) 3 rods fish on each beat. Ghillies and guides are available on request.
There are numerous trout lochs on the estate offering some excellent wild brown trout fishing.
Sea fishing trips can be arranged from Melvich Bay or from Scrabster, which provide a fun day out.
Stalking
Bighouse Estate extends to some 60,000 acres of wild Sutherland landscape bordering onto the Flow Country. The wide rolling plains and hills make stalking an exciting challenge for both the experienced and inexperienced stalker.
Stalking normally takes place from August to October and Hind Stalking from November to February. The estate also provides Roe stalking in the numerous forested areas.
Shooting
The estate has developed a successful driven partridge shoot where birds are driven across deep gullies and ravines in spectacular settings close to the River Halladale. Walked up grouse over dogs is also available at Bighouse and on neighbouring estates. Falconers are also welcome.
There is also excellent rough shooting for woodcock, snipe and pheasant.

Getting There
The lodge is situated just two and a half hours by road from Inverness Airport, or a 45 minute drive from Wick Airport. Bighouse Lodge is half a mile off the A836 Northern Highland Coastal Route. It is also possible to travel north from Inverness by train or coach.
Accommodation
Bighouse Lodge has been recently refurbished and offers 12 ensuite double/twin bedrooms.
The drawing room, study and dining room all feature open fires. Facilities also include a large conference/ballroom, television room, drying room and games room.

Activities
Additional Activities at Bighouse
Bighouse can also organise a local band for a Ceilidh, a Piper, Raptor displays (Golden eagles, Hawks and Falcons etc). Beach cricket and football, petanque, swimming and surfing in the sea (Bighouse have about 4 body boards, towels and an outside shower) although we would suggest that you bring wet suits!
Additional Activities in the Area
Lots to do for all ages, including horseback riding nearby, walks of all grades, golf very close by where Bighouse have a membership, fishing for sea trout in Loch Hope, sea fishing from Scrabster (up to 11 persons).
Cliff walks with the RSPB, mountain walking on Ben Hope or Loyal.
