Drimnin House is a 19th century family home situated in an idyllic coastal location on the secluded Drimnin Estate with wonderful sea views down the Sound of Mull. Tobermory is only 15 minutes by boat from the picturesque Drimnin harbour. Guests are encouraged to treat the house as their home and to relax, while enjoying the fabulous food and the surroundings of the estate. Catering includes four-course dining, featuring local meats, seafood, cheeses and seasonal vegetables from the garden.
Jutting into the Atlantic but sheltered between Ardnamurchan to the north and the Isle of Mull to the south, Drimnin Estate occupies 7,000 acres of the western tip of the little-known Morvern peninsula. Combining rugged coastline, ancient woodland, heather moorland and rich pastures, Drimnin lies at the end of the public road, undisturbed by traffic and is a haven for wildlife, and those who love history, nature and solitude.
The estate has had a fascinating, often dramatic and sometimes tragic history, which is reflected in its buildings, ruins and traditions. Today the estate has a productive farm and forests offering stalking (later in the season Sept/Oct), fishing and a variety of holiday accommodation, and is home to wildlife and landscape artist Alan Hayman. Selling its meat locally, the farm has Luing and Highland cattle, Blackface and Hebridean sheep and wild deer on the hill.
Drimnin House is surrounded by beautiful gardens which provide a perfect marquee setting overlooking the sea. Abundant wildlife including pine martens, wildcats and deer inhabit the woodland and open hillside, while otters are often spotted by the shore and sea eagles, golden eagles and buzzards can be seen overhead. The Estate also boasts miles of rugged coastline with inlets and coves, interspersed with pebble-covered beaches. The Estate recently started distilling a premium single malt whisky using the estate’s forest to provide wood chip to heat the stills.
There is a variety of onsite outdoor activities for visitors such as gentle walks around the grounds, a full day’s hike, exploring the rugged coastline, walking the old drover’s road around the coast to the former inn at Doirlinn, enjoying a picnic in scenic spots, stalking, cycling and fishing. Boat trips include a regular Drimnin to Tobermory passenger water taxi service, or you can rent the boat privately. Or try clay pigeon shooting, archery, a guided wildlife/ecology walk. A Land Rover expedition can be arranged or a tour of the neighbouring distillery. Come and enjoy sheepdog or shearing demonstrations or, depending on the time of year, feed the lambs and deer.
Although good weather can never be guaranteed in the Highlands, the Estate benefits from long days during the summer months and crisp, clear winter days as well as the occasional ferocious storm! If conditions are good, located this far north and with very little light pollution just occasionally you may be fortunate to see the splendour of the Aurora Borealis (Northern lights) .
The lovingly restored 19th Century St. Columba’s Chapel, magnificently positioned overlooking the Sound of Mull, makes the Estate a perfect wedding venue for those looking for beauty and seclusion for their special day. In addition, the chapel can be hired for other services, corporate use, renewal of vows, musical events or special occasions.
