The Old Manse at Balmacara, now known as ‘Tulach Ard’, the same as the hill behind the house, is the childhood home of Lachlan Stewart, architect. It is on its own, right on the shore, overlooking Avernish Point, past Eilean Donan Castle on the road to the Isle of Skye.
First built in 1720, Lachie and his son have remodelled and modernised it making it suitable for contemporary living. The former dining room and drawing room is now one huge room overlooking the sea. Ideal for a large family celebration around the table, it is big enough to roll back the carpets for a dance or ceilidh. There are seven double bedrooms in the main house. Ground source underfloor heating has been installed and extra bathrooms created making it very comfortable without interfering with the original house. The Aga remains and the house feels as it should, with much of the old family furniture mixed with ANTA soft furnishings decorated by Annie Stewart.
All sorts of activities are available locally – fishing trips, boat trips, stalking, climbing, off-roading or even a cook to take care of the catering during your holiday.
The Main House sleeps 14. There is an adjacent cottage which can accommodate a further 4 guests at an additional cost.
Tulach Ard is a fantastic house situated in a coastal position with wonderful views overlooking Loch Alsh. The house has been upgraded ANTA style throughout and is a perfect base for west coast family holidays and special celebrations.
In the main house there are :
2 double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms 1 double bedroom with a bath in the room 2 double bedrooms 2 twin bedrooms 2 bathrooms 1 separate WC
The ground floor has one main living and dining room and a conservatory with a small snooker table.
The Dining Room Table seats 14.
There is an adjacent cottage which can accommodate a further 4 guests at an additional cost.
By prior arrangement we are happy for guests to bring a dog, however would ask that it remains on the ground floor.
Fishing, shooting and stalking can all be arranged on your behalf nearby.
A great selection of activities are available and can be arranged near by – fishing, shooting, stalking, bird watching, boating, mountain biking and golf is available at Loch Carron although it is very rustic.
Historic sites – see the magnificent Eilean Donan Castle, home of the MacRae clan at the nearby village of Dornie and Glenshiel, site of the famous Jacobite battle.
Seal spotting trips can be arranged in the pretty coastal village of Plockton and enjoy a stroll around the National Trust Balmacara Woodland Gardens and Square.
Take a day trip to explore the Isle Skye via the bridge or you can still go ‘over the sea to Skye’ on the Glenelg car ferry which runs during the summer months.
