Sporting

Salmon Fishing
The salmon fishing season runs from January 15th to October 15th. There are four main pools on the river – the Rocks, the Boat Pool, the Corner Pool and the Platform. The best fishing is at the “back end” from mid-August until mid-October. We are enjoying an increasing number of salmon on all local beats. Fish now tend to average about 10-14 lbs.

Spinning is advisable when the level is above normal, but at other times fly is preferred. Recommended patterns are Hairy Mary, Munro Killer, Garry Dog, Shrimp Fly, General Practitioner and Blue Charm. For spinning baits, Toby, Mepps or Blair Spoon is preferred.

The best fly-fishing pool is the Corner Pool and for spinning, the Boat Pool is the best.

The river can be very dangerous and it is essential that prospective anglers have the Estate Manager or an estate worker accompany them. A wading stick is strongly advised. Rods and tackle are available in the Boathouse.

Trout fishing
The hill lochs and the Brae loch are stocked with Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout. The season runs from March 15th to October 6th for Brown Trout, and for Rainbow Trout there is no closed season. A boat is available on the top lochs.

Stalking
Pitcastle also owns Glenlochay Estate, which offers challenging red deer stalking for guests staying at the castle. Pitcastle offers good roe buck stalking.

Shooting
The estate also provide mini-driven and walked up pheasant and partridge shooting as well as duck flighting on the top lochs.
