Isle of Mull Mull is one of the foremost destinations for nature holidays in the UK and is renowned for its dramatic landscape and abundant wildlife both on and around its shores. In addition to the sea life, the island is host to one of the highest density of eagles in Europe, having a number of pairs of breeding golden eagles and also a breeding pair of white‐tailed or sea eagles. Otters will often been seen too.
Duart Castle is the imposing 14th century home of the MacLean’s and is clearly visible from the ferry as you approach Mull. It was here that a number of sailors from the Spanish Armada ended up after their ship was sunk in Tobermory harbour.
Iona. No visit to Mull is complete without a visit to Iona and its famous Abbey. Founded by St. Columba in around 570AD it is one of the foremost Christian sites in Scotland and is the burial place for many early Scottish kings, including Macbeth. Also visit the beautiful Martyr’s Bay where 68 monks were massacred by the Vikings in 806 AD.
Walking The Fossil Tree—one of the most famous walks on the island takes you on a journey back in time, past deserted townships and into the Tertiary age, to a time when massive lava flows erupted from Ben More. At the far end of the peninsular is the cast of a 40 foot high conifer, once part of an ancient forest that was enveloped in an early lava flow. In addition to the tree the walk takes you past amazing basalt geological formations and into the aptly named ‘Wilderness’ where wild goats (said to be the only survivors of a wrecked Armada Galleon) are the only inhabitants.
